y = -x - 1 (a)

y = x + 3 (b)

Replace the value of y in the first equation (a) by the value of y in the second equation (b).

x+3=-x-1

Solve for x

x+x=-1-3

2x=-4

x=-4/2

x= -2

Replace the value of x in (a) or (b)

y=-x-1

y= -(-2)-1

y= 2-1

y=1
