open system: mass or energy can be gained from or lost to the environment
closed system: does not allow transfer of mass in or out of the system
isolated system: a physical system that is far from other systems so it does not interact with them or a thermodynamic system that is enclosed by rigid immovable walls through which matter not energy can pass
