To find out how much it is in cups, we must know how many cups 1 quart is equal to. 

1 quart = 4 cups.

5 1/2 (or 5.5) quarts = 22 cups. 
1 quart=2 pints=4 cups
5 1/2*4=20 4/2=22
5 1/2 quarts is 22 cups.
